Police raid ‘baby factory’, arrest 12

nigeria police badge logoSeven expectant mothers were among the twelve arrested women when men of the Akwa Ibom state police command carried out a raid at a ‘baby factory’ located at NEPA Line, in Ikot Ekpene L.G.A.

Briefing newsmen in Uyo yesterday, the Akwa Ibom State Commissioner of Police, Umar Gwadube represented by the State Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Etim Dickson said the police carried out the raid following a tip-off by a good Nigerian that one Ime Thompson Akpan (female) age 35 and another woman popularly known as Mma Nurse now at large were operating a Baby Factory where 7 pregnant women were camped for commercial procreation.

According to the police commissioner, two of the expectant women, Ikwo Johnson Ofuo and Joy Micheal John on arrest and during investigation confessed that they were enticed to the business on the grounds that on delivery, a sum of N400, 000.00 would be given to them if it is a male child while a female child attracts N350, 000.00.

A mild drama however ensued at the CID premises when journalists were allowed to interact and question the suspects as one of the accused claimed that he was the father of one of the suspect Ukeme Okon Etim age 18 who delivered a baby boy at the police Medical Unit Ikot Ekpene while awaiting interrogation.

Speaking to our correspondent during the interaction, one of the suspects, Blessing Jonah Udoaka said she was ignorant about what she was doing at the Baby factory.

She narrated that she was a Bakassi returnee who had lost her parents, pointing out that she ran into a lady who promised she was going to help her but only to find herself at a home with some other girls.

She however confessed that a man was assigned to sleep with her and that is how she got pregnant.

Another suspect Ikwo Johnson Ofuo while recounting her story said she was already pregnant for her boyfriend when she arrived Ikot Ekpene from Lagos where she was staying with her aunty.

She said her mother refused to have her back home because of her condition.

She claimed that it was in that condition that a woman she didn’t know saw her and promise to help her adding that, that is how she found herself in the Baby factory.

In a related development, the police said that they have arrested one Imaobong Okon Effiong for child theft.

According to a report, Imaobong was said to have stolen the baby named Jessy Benson aged four left in her care by one Doreen Benson at Idu Uruan L.G.A.

The police said that it was on the strength of the report, by the boy’s mother that Imaobong was arrested.

During the interrogation, Imaobong confessed that her younger sister one Uduak Okon Effiong conspired and jointly handed over Master Jessie Benson to Christiana Etim Oko , a traditional birth attendant residing at Destiny Road Idu Uruan for the purpose of selling the child.

The second suspect one Uduak Okon Effiong, a traditional birth attendant (TBA) who received the child for the purpose of trafficking was also arrested.

The police statement however said that they have recovered the child and is reunited with his mother.
