The Coalition of United Political Parties (CUPP) yesterday raised the alarm that officers of the Nigeria Police have sealed off the Eagle Square, the venue of the scheduled presidential declaration of former Kano Governor, Senator Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso.
This is even as the Kwankwaso Campaign Organisation expressed disappointment that the Federal Capital Territory Administration(FCTA) suddenly turned down the request earlier approved “for some flimsy reasons”
The Spokesperson of CUPP, Mr Ikenga Imo Ugochinyere, at a press conference yesterday in Abuja, faulted the reason adduced by the Integrated Facility Management Service Ltd, the facility managers of the Eagle Square.
The facility managers, it was learnt, had in a letter dated August 27, 2018, told Kwankwaso presidential organisation that “the event can no longer hold on the said date because it is a political event, and 29th August 2018 happened to be a work day, as it would disrupt the usual work flow of the federal secretariat.”
The letter, which was signed by Usman Mukhtar Raji, apologised to the organisers for the oversight.
Howevet, Ugochinyere said Eagle Square was not built for only weekend events.
According to him, “The venue was paid for and we were just informed a few hours ago after the police told them they could not use the venue because they cannot control the crowd that is going to come”.
He accused the Inspector General of Police of working for the APC, stressing that they are afraid that the huge turnout of people that would “come to support the aspirant will send a strong signal that is going to shake the political base of the APC.”
Ugochinyere further gave our examples to debunk reasons given by the facility managers to deny Kwankwaso the use of the venue.
According to him: “1. On July 10, 2018, the Buhari Youth Support Organization organised a rally at the Eagle Square which ended in fracas.
“2. On May 29, 2015, which was on Friday, Buhari was sworn in at the
Eagle square as President.
“3. On 13 June, 2014, APC had its national convention where John Oyegun was elected and Buhari and APC leaders were there. It was a working day.
“4. On November 19, 2014, which was on Wednesday, APC had their Salvation Rally that had Buhari, el-Rufai and other chieftains of the APC in attendance.
“So where are these excuses coming from?
“This is not the first time they are doing this. They stopped him from being received in Kano. They want to stop him because the president is scared of the popularity of the aspirant.
“This is part of a plot to institute a full blown dictatorship in Nigeria if the Nigerian people make the mistake of allowing him to be there in 2019”, he said.
Meanwhile, the Kwankwaso Campaign Organisation, in a statement yesterday, expressed disappointment that the Federal Capital Territory Administration(FCTA) suddenly turned down the request earlier approved “for some flimsy reasons”
