Armed mobile policemen, numbering eight, in Gombe yesterday, pounced on an Okada rider and his passenger when the Okada rider violated a trafficlight located at a junction closed to Government House in Gombe.
Our correspondent, who was at the scene of the incident reports that trouble started when an Okada rider violated a traffic rule and was stopped by the traffic warden. Following the arrest, ateam of armed mobile policemen who were on patrol stormed the area andstarted beating the Okada rider and his passenger without seekingrelevant information from the traffic wardens.
According to an eyewitness account who spoke to our correspondent, said thatimmediately the armed policemen stormed the area they started beatingthe Okada rider and the passenger without obtaining any useful informationconcerning the incident.
The passenger, whose name was given as Mohammed Bello, was said to have suffered in the hands of the armedpolicemen which they said they use tea-gas on his eyes.
Speaking on condition of anonymity, another eye witness said the armed policemen did not only beat the man but they used tea-gas on his eyes,which he described as inhuman.
He said it took a long time before the man could open his eyes,stressing that there is an urgent need for state government to intervenein the issue before the police finish citizens in the state.
According to him, the responsibility of the police was to ensure thatlives and property of the citizens is protected and not to cause havoc to the society.
