Worried by the killing of children under five by pneumonia, nine leading health and children’s organisations have concluded arrangements to meet in Barcelona, Spain on January 29 and 31st, to proffer solution to the child killer disease.
This was contained in a statement issued yesterday by Save the Children International.
The statement said “pneumonia claimed the lives of 800,000 children under the age of five in 2018, or one child every 39 seconds. That was more than any other disease. Yet pneumonia remains largely forgotten.”
It listed the organizations to include; ISGlobal, Save the Children, UNICEF, Every Breath Counts, the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, ”la Caixa” Foundation, USAID, Unitaid and Gavi, the Vaccine Alliance.
.The statement said that the Global forum on pneumonia will agree on concrete steps governments and their partners can take to achieve a dramatic reduction in child pneumonia deaths.
It said countries hardest hit by the disease are also expected to make major commitments.
Some of the key speakers expected at the conference include; Letizia Ortiz Rocasolano, Queen of Spain; María Margarita Robles Fernández, Acting Minister of Foreign Affairs, Spain; Henrietta Fore, Executive Director of UNICEF; Kevin Watkins, CEO of Save the Children and Osagie Ehanire, Federal Minister of Health, Nigeria.
