The Capital City of Uyo, the Akwa Ibom State capital will be excited as both foreign and local players chased two hundred million naira at the Godswill Akpabio International Scrabble Classics.
The tournament which gets underway this weekend are expecting players around the world, including the reigning world champion, Nigel Richard, who was beaten to sixth position in the last year edition, current African Scrabble champions as well as four former winners of the Akpabio Scrabble Classics, will compete for the N20m prize event.
According to the president of the Nigeria Scrabble Federation (NSF), Alhaji Suleiman Gora, this year edition would attract both foreign and local players, jostling for the honours.
“This will be the first time ever in any competition worldwide that you have up to 400 entries and we are in the process of updating our software to accommodate the influx, especially in the Open Category,” he said.
He said the event would serve as a good tune-up for Nigerian players for the African and World Scrabble Championships coming up in Cape Town, South Africa and London in October and November respectively.
“Remember we are also using this high profile event to prepare our players for the African and World Championship coming up soon in South Africa and London respectively,” Gora stated.
The International Scrabble Classics was declared open yesterday by the sponsor and Akwa Ibom State governor, Godswill Akpabio.
