From Femi Oyelola, Kaduna
Kaduna State correspondent of Peoples Daily Newspaper Femi Oyelola, has won the 2019 Nigerian Union of Journalists Kaduna State Council award for best crime reporting.
The award was presented to him during the 2019 Press Week held in Kaduna yesterday.
The Chairman of the Council, Yusuf said the council chose Mr Femi Oyelola because he is committed to informing the public and raising awareness on crimes even in difficult environment, which is sometime risky to the journalists’ lives.
He described the awardee as “a beacon of light in a darkening world of crime.
Comrade Adamu Yusuf added that the council will ensure journalists collaborate, cooperate on investigations, crime reporting.
Speaking on the paper “Media as a catalyst for the promotion of peace and national security” the guest lecturer, Isaq Alhassan Quarantine Mata of Department of Mass Communication said primary focus of a mass media is on issues that benefit the general public and uphold fairness, justice, national security, and international cooperation.
He added the media had to carry keep a check on the routine activities of the authorities, hold governments accountable for good governance and assist the citizens to evaluate the efficiency of government
In his remark, the Special Adviser to Kaduna State Governor Mallam Nasir El-Rufai, Muyiwa Adekeye said the state government will work with media houses for the progress of the state.
He however, tasked journalists on the need to balance their report.
