The opposition parties in Nasarawa state yesterday reacted and rejected the recent appointment of the Interim Management Committee Chairmen (IMC) and Members by the state Governor, Tanko Almakura.
The opposition parties which includes; Peoples Democratic Parties (PDP) and All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA), in a statement issued to newsmen by the PDP Public Relations Officer (PRO), Mohammed Bwala, and APGA state Chairman, Musa Saidu, said they have rejected the appointment describing it as illegal.
They further explained that the manner in which 11 IMC Chairmen and 148 members were screened by the House of Assembly and inaugurated within an hour on the same day was suspicious and called for its cancellation.
According to Mohammed Bwala, the announcement for the appointment was done on Monday 23rd, screened by the Assembly and inaugurated by the Governor the same day, saying it was unusual in a democratic set up.
It added that as far as the PDP is concern, any appointment of people under whatever name is illegal and unconstitutional.
“Our party would not accept anything short of what is contained in the constitution as regard to the status of people to manage the affairs at the Local Government level.
“The constitution only recognize elected officials to manage the affairs of LGAs, so this appointment is illegal and whatever the officials would do would amount to illegality,” he added.
He further said that in 2016, a High Court in the state had declared the appointment of LGAs officials’ illegal and ordered the government to conduct election within 140 days from the day the judgment was delivered.
On his part the APGA Chairman in the state Musa Saidu, has called on the state governor to respect court order and conduct LG election.
He continued “As the Chief Security Officer in the state, Governor Umaru Al-Makura should respect court order and the provision of the 1999 constitution as amended he has swore to protect.
Peoples Daily gathered that the Governor sent the list of Chairmen of 11 out of 13 LGAs and 147 members to the assembly on 23, and they were screened and inaugurated on the same day 24th October, 2017.
It could be recall that a state High court sitting in Keffi LGA of the state had recently dissolved the IMC Chairmen and ordered the state government to conduct election within 140 days.
