The Secretary, Health and Human Secretariat (HHSS) of the Federal Capital Territory Administration (FCTA), Barr Amanda Pam has decried the enormous inadequate spaces and overstretched facilities in government hospitals in the Territory.
In particular, the secretary expressed serious concern that there are no empty bed spaces in the
hospitals, while doctors share one office, and use one couch in examining their patients.
She noted that the normal ratio of nurses to patients is 4:1, but in FCT hospitals they are about 40:1. She spoke when she inspected facilities at the Maitama District Hospital last week.
According to her, the biggest challenge facing government-owned hospitals in the territory is inadequate spaces to operate.
She explained that the planners of FCT did not envisaged that the population of the territory will grow as much as it is today, which according to her, was responsible for the paucity of facilities at the hospitals.
Pam pointed out the situation is worsened by the high number of patients coming from Nasarawa and Niger states to access health facilities in the territory, because they are highly developed, except for the dire constraints of spaces.
However, the Secretary observed that in spite of these challenges, doctors and specialists working in the hospitals are working very hard to satisfy needs of their patients.
“My visits to the hospitals have been quite impressive. The biggest constraint is that of space. I was in Asokoro District Hospital yesterday and today in Maitama District Hospital.
“To me the general hospitals here look like the federal medical centres, because even some teaching hospitals in the country don’t have what we have here,” she said.
Speaking earlier, the medical director, Maitama District Hospital, Dr. (Mrs.) Sikirat Adetoun Sotimehin had affirmed that the major challenge facing the hospital is inadequate spaces, was however optimistic that the visit by the secretary will be an opportunity to make an improvement.
