The Acting Registrar of the Environmental Health Officer’s Registration Council of Nigeria (EHORECON), Dr Baba Yakubu Muhammed said over 40,000 environmental health volunteers will be activated and deployed to monitor 19,000 West Africa Examination Council (WAEC) nation wide.
Muhammed made the disclosure during a discontaminated exercise at Federal Science and Technical College Orozo, Abuja recently.
He said the exercise was the directives of the minister of environment to mountain surveillance desk in all the schools in Nigeria.
Speaking further, the Registrar explained that “this exercise is a follow up of the minister’s pronouncements in Kaduna,that the federal ministry of environment is deploying the team of license environmental health officers to contaminate and disinfect 104 federal government schools across the nation.
He added that “the surveillance desk officers were going to enforce the issues of social distancing, compulsory wearing of face mask and ensuring that, provision are made for hand sanitizers and wash stations in schools“.
Moreso, he said “the minister has also directed the federal ministry of environment and the environmental council that regulates environmental health, to set up a monitoring committee where they will deploy use of technology called ATP machines,that can dictate the efficiency of the contaminated chemicals that has been use in the schools .
He stated that the ministry has already put in a place a mechanism for the involvement of private sector participation to decontamination and disinfection exercise.
“All this, is the effort of the ministry in contributing their quota towards the protection of our children as they resume schools to pursue their career”.
Meanwhile, the contribution of the ministry was a directive by presidential task force of Covid -19.
In her responses,the Principal of Federal Science and Technical college Orozo,Mrs. Kenneth Rose said “Iam very impressed and delighted seeing what is happening here today. We are really happy the ministry of environment is decontaminating the entire school environment”.
She said, “this is so good because it will make the environment conducive for learning for our students“.
Kenneth maintained that, the college was very prepared to welcome their students. ”We have ensured that all the directives from the ministry of environment and education were adhered to.
The rules of staying safe is applied very strictly and monitored from the classes, dinner hall , hostels among others. We really appreciate the ministry for coming to us.”
