Benue state government has constituted a committee on implementation of the anti-grazing law.
Inaugurating the committee at Government House, Makurdi, Governor Samuel Ortom charged the members to effectively control and regulate movement of livestock including cows in the State.
He said they were selected based on their knowledge and foresight to carry out this onerous task, averring that they have a wide range of power which should be used consciously without fear and favor.
While urging them to be guided by the rule of law in the discharge of their duty, the governor reiterated that the anti-grazing law which was accented to on May 22nf, 2017 is not targeted at any individual or group but meant to foster peace and u detests ding between farmers and herdsmen.
“My government assures all Nigerians of freedom to live without hinderance in peace and harmony. This is the only way we can guarantee a prosperous society. The law is the only way to resolve the incessant clashes between farmers and herdsmen. It provides for protection for the groups. I want to correct the erroneous impression that by November 1st, 2017, all herdsmen in the State would be chased away. We do not hate herdsmen. We consume. Excerpts slot of meat but we must be alive to consume it. We are against cattle rustling.””Ortom stated.
Responding, Chairman of the committee Col.Edwin Jando said they are given a herculean task of enforcing a law that is strange.
He assured that they will stick to the rules, adding that the committee will embark on advocacy in sensitivity the people about the anti-grazing law.
