Chairman, National Union of Road Transport Workers (NURTW), Bwari Area Council branch, Mr. Yakubu Adamu, has called for the provision of functional public toilets and provision of water system, in order to help curb open defecation in the area.
Adamu told the News Agency of Nigeria on Tuesday, in Bwari that lack of toilet and operational water system in the motor parks and markets caused people to indulge in open defecation.
He appealed to the Bwari Area Council to make public toilets functional and provide borehole water system to promote meaningful growth.
“The Bwari Area Council environmental officials locked the toilet; so whenever we want to defecate, we go to the Central Market or any public toilet, because we don’t have one.
“In every park that we know there is a borehole, but we don’t have such in Bwari.
“Also, during the rainy seasons we always experience difficulty in terms of carrying out our daily tasks at the park.
“The practice of using our lean resources to repair damages caused by rain on roads within the motor park affects us negatively, since we could no longer rely on the authority.
“We appeal to the council to live up to its responsibility through renovation of the motor park,” he stressed.
He commended the relevant trainings of the union members by security agencies in the area since January 2014.
“The motor park is always a busy environment where one meets different kinds of people; you may not be able to identify anyone, except you have been trained,” he said.
Adamu therefore urged members of the association and the public to shun violence. (NAN)
