At least one person was killed yesterday and several others injured in Owukpa, Ogbadibo local government area of Benue state, in an attack on the community by suspected herdsmen.
The chairman of the council Hon. Sunday Ojo, who disclosed this in a telephone conversation with newsmen, said the incident would have escalated but for the quick intervention of security agents.
He disclosed that an immediate meeting was convened with the leadership of the Fulani as well as traditional rulers in the area to avert any reprisal attack.
“I also appealed passionately with the youths not to take the laws into their hands”, he said.
In another vein, armed robbers invaded the residence of the Benue State correspondent of Vanguard newspaper, Mr. Peter Duru, located off popular Abu King Shuluwa road.
Narrating the incident, Duru said the incident happened at about 10 a.m., when he and his family members had gone to church. “The robbers broke into my house from an uncompleted building behind my house. They broke the burglary proof and entered inside carting several items including some amount of money, jewelries, clothes, IPads belonging to my kids, phones and electrical appliances”, Duru said, intimating that he has since reported the incident to ‘E’ Division of Benue State Police command. Reacting to the incidents, the Police Public Relations’ Officer, Daniel Ezeala denied any attack by suspected Fulani herdsmen in Ogbadibo. He said trouble started when the indigenes issued a sack notice to the Fulani people and as they were leaving, someone engaged them in a fight, he was severely injured and is presently receiving treatment at an undisclosed hospital.
