ObasanjoFrom Samuel Ayodele, Lagos

A Lagos-based group, Save Lagos Group(SLG) has declared that the former Nigeria President, Chief Olusegun Obasanjo lacked  democratic credentials to criticize President Goodluck Jonathan, saying that the eight years rule of former President witnessed undemocratic culture and bad governance of the executive arm of government, urging him to stop openly abusing President Jonathan.

The SLG, also maintained that the period of Obasanjo’s democratic government experienced tyranny period, where executive arm of government violated the court orders at will and institutionalized corruption, but using anti corruption bodies to victimize his (Obasanjo) political opponents, urging Obasanjo to see himself as a father of the country like other nation’s ex-leaders.

Meanwhile, the group backed Ekiti state Governor, Mr. Ayodele Fayose for what he called Obasanjo’s unnecessary outbursts on President Goodluck Jonathan’s administration, noting that Nigeria witnessed worst democratic government under Obasanjo regime.

Speaking through the group’s Convener, Comrade Adeniyi Alimi Sulaiman in an issued and signed press statement, which a copy was made available to newsmen in Lagos state yesterday, insisted that Chief Obasanjo was all out to run down the Jonathan’s government  which Obasanjo detested during his tenure, called on the former President to learn about decorum in democratic governance.

It would be recalled that Governor Fayose had recently described Obasanjo as one of the major problems facing the country, saying that the former Head of State was behaving un-presidentially and must be told to respect himself.

The governor added that the former president’s open castigation of President Goodluck Jonathan was unbecoming of someone who led the country for 11 years and wasted billions of naira in his attempt to perpetuate himself in office beyond the constitutionally recognized two-term.

“Have you ever heard a former president of the United States of America (USA) openly abusing a sitting president of the country? Does it mean that former USA president, Bill Clinton agreed with all the policies of George W. Bush and the incumbent president, Barack Obama?” he queried.

According to Sulaiman,” it is shameful on the part of former President Olusegun Obasanjo who detested criticisms throughout his eight years tenure of office and  institutionalize anti-democratic tenets like Do or Die politics, violation of rule of law, disobedience order of the competent court jurisdiction, electoral rigging, disrespect for constitutional provision and host of others.

Sulaiman therefore called on the well-meaning Nigerians to call Chief Obasanjo to order, by telling him not to truncate our hard-earned democracy because of selfish aggrandizement.
