The Borno office of the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) has donated face masks, hand sanitisers, and locally made soaps to the state government.
The commodities were donated to support efforts at containing the further spread of the coronavirus.
Presenting the items to the state’s High Powered Committee on COVID-19 at a ceremony in Maiduguri on Monday, the State Coordinator of NYSC, Mr Nura Umar, said the donation was in furtherance of the resolve of the scheme to accord priority to health issues.
The News Agency of Nigeria reports that the locally made soaps were produced by corps members in the state.
Umar said that at the onset of COVID-19, the Director General of NYSC, Brig.-Gen. Shuaibu Ibrahim had challenged corps members to use local content to produce quality items that would assist in preventing the spread of the pandemic.
Receiving the items on behalf of the committee, the state’s Commissioner of Health, Dr. Salihu Kwaya-Bura, applauded the gesture by the NYSC, saying it was timely at such a trying moment.
Kwaya-Bura lauded NYSC for its sustained contributions to the development of the state and urged other agencies to emulate it.
“I want to assure you that we will continue to partner with you and all those willing to join in the collective fight against the pandemic,” Kwaya-Bura said.
NAN further reports that the corps members were also at the Shehu of Borno’s palace to present similar donations to support the traditional institution’s efforts in the fight.
Speaking, the Shehu of Borno, Alh. Abubakar Garbai, extolled the ingenuity of the corps members in supporting the fight against COVID-19. (NAN)
