NYSC and ‘societal reform’

NYSC membersBy Hadiza Babayola Abdu

Believe meor not, my career would never be completewithout the one year mandatory national service under the NYSC which is meant to nurture Nigerian graduates within the thirty-year age limit from all axes of the country to become patriotic or lovers of country. My friend said it the scheme was meaningless and wished she never had toparticipate in the recent 2014 Batch B corps exercise. I used to have the same notion:what gain it made since amongst its objectives was to leave ones place of origin and resident to another to get accustom to other ways of lives had been defeated, youths now cling to service in their abode and the three Rs of Reconstruction – Reconciliation and Rehabilitation – made no prominence to this generation, patheticallywe need it dearly now.

Our country is in disarray. Insecurity is a cog in the wheel of our nation’s development; we no longer move freely in our country. Nowhere is safe. This programme can help youths be agent of change to the society, repair the damages and ongoing hostilities, since the aim of the critical programme is to promote national unity, remove prejudice and develop common unity. Believe me friend you will get to meet beautiful people am not insinuating physique, but creative bent minds.

The National Youth Service Corps has four cardinal programmes, namely: Orientation course, primary assignment, community development and winding -up / passing out ceremony. In each of thesefour cardinal point you be acquainted with intelligent youths who share your dreams and aspiration. You will gain experience and prepare for the outside world. The labour market is choked; don’t let that get into you. Greater opportunity awaits you because the scheme encourages interested corps members to pursue vigorously the path of self reliance and entrepreneurship by way of training and providing of soft loans. Thus after service year you have something to fall back on, before you get a white collar job if you so wish. More over businesses are lucrative these days.

The need to involve corps members in the development of the country is a clarion call to them, a wake for the impending crisis .Election is around the corner be a solution provider and not a part of problem solver. Desist from all forms of violence during the forthcoming election .corps members are now part of electoral preceding. Do not let any politician buy you or your vote. When they seat on their throne in Aso Rock no one remembers the favour rendred, you have been used. Or let me refresh our memories the 2011 gubernatorial and presidential elections the worst hit were corps members, some whom lost their lives. Be the change you want to see.

Drop serotypes and accommodate one another, take back good will messages about the locality you served back home; the future of generation lies with you, you cannot change people but yourself. Be that everlasting change you redeemed for.
