The Nigerian Union of Teachers, NUT, Abuja Municipal Branch, organized a 4-day grassroots sports for students in Junior Secondary Schools in the Federal Capital Territory, FCT, Abuja.
Tagged “Grassroots School Athletics Competition 2017”, the completion, which was the maiden edition, according to Comrade John Ofei, was organized to discover and nurture future talents for Nigeria athletes.
Comrade Ofei further noted that the competition was borne out of the need to replace aging Nigerian athletes such as Blessing Okagbare and also to maintain Nigeria’s name in the comity of athletes.
“The aim of the sport is to engage young students in Junior Secondary Schools in the FCT to ensure that we bring up people who will take over from the aging and retiring athletes in Nigeria in order to keep the pace of Nigeria in the athletic world.
“It is the maiden edition and we are hoping it will be a continuous event annually. It is basically for the Junior Secondary Students in the FCT. We are doing it in conjunction with Athletics Federation of Nigeria, AFN.
“One of the major reasons we came up with this programme is that we have discovered that people like Blessing Okagbare have already done their best for this country and because they are already going off the track and we need to sustain the name Nigeria has been known for. That is why we have come up with this programme so that there will be future medalists for this nation.
Com. Ofei who added that inter-house sports has been made compulsory in all the schools in the FCT, appealed to government to support sports and help reduce social vices among the youths in the country.
“In FCT, inter-house sports in schools is picking up. There is a directive that every Secondary School in the FCT should ensure that there is inter-house competition and it is a good one. We are sure that every school has it in their own programmes that every year there should be an inter-house sports competition in the school. All things being equal, with this arrangement, sports will be on the limelight in FCT.
“Government should come into sports by going down to the grassroots in order to catch them young. Their talents and energy will be channeled towards sports and they will be saved from social vices,’ he stated.
Also speaking, Comrade Charity Dum, a teacher from JSS Iddo Sarki in Airport Road, Abuja, said that the exercise was organized to keep the students fit and help them to think of having careers in sporting activities.
“NUT is organizing the sports competition for the Junior Secondary Schools in the FCT. I came with students from JSS Iddo Sarki in Airport Road, Abuja. The exercise is important to the students because it will also help them to be very strong and participate in sports. It makes them to be physically fit. It will also help them in the future beyond their academic pursuit. Some of them could end up having careers in various sports we have.
“Sporting activities in my school have been very encouraging. Every time we call them for sports, they will be happy. We do our inter-house sports every year and it has been fruitful,” she said.
