The National Teachers’ Institute (NTI), said it organized a workshop to strengthen and expand its programmes in the country.
Speaking during the workshop, the Institute Director General, Dr. Aminu Ladan Sharehu, said that the strategic importance of the Institute as the sole provider of in-service training to serving teachers, made the federal government in 2006 to mandate the Institute to run annual capacity-building workshops for teachers nationwide under the aegis of the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) project.
Dr. Aminu said the aim is to map out new strategies for the strengthening and enhancement of the Institute’s programmes.
He said the introduction of the Nigeria Certificate in Education programme by Distance Learning System in 1990, has helped in taking education to the door steps of teeming population of Nigerian teachers, who would have been constrained to attain higher qualification through the conventional system.
The workshop, which was organised by the Institute, invited academics from various universities and other tertiary institutions across the country to brain storm on selected areas, such as English, Mathematics, Physical and Education and Integrated Science, among others.
