Worried over the arrest of 486 northerners by soldiers in Abia state, the Association of Northern Nigerian Students (ANNS) are demanding that security agents, Umuahia/ Ohanize Ndigbo Youth Council (OYC) should stop referring to northerners residing in South-East as Boko Haram.
The students made their views known in a statement, signed by Comrade Isah Abubakar and Comrade Abdulsalam M. Kazeem, President and Public Relations Officer (PRO) respectively.
It could be recalled that few days ago 486 northern travelers were arrested by soldiers on their way to Abia state, on the allegation that they belong to dreaded Boko Haram group.
Their arrest caused uproar nationwide, particularly by northern elders, including Arewa Consultative Forum (ACF), Jama’atul Nasrul Islam (JNI) among others.
The students group further urged media professionals to always investigate their report properly before making it public, as according to them, such propaganda is capable of causing panic and instability in the country.
“We demand that the leadership of Northern Governors Forum to urgently hold a security summit with regard to the present security situation in the North.
“We demand that, the South-East people should stop referring to innocent northerners traveling to the area as insurgents, as it is an unverified allegation aimed at infringing on rights of people going about their lawful business,” the group stated.
The youth group also called on security agencies to stop playing politics with the issue of insecurity in the country, while demanding for the unconditional release of the Chibok School girls.
ANNS call on the Federal Government to immediately intervene in the present ASUP and COASUP strike.
