Governors from the northern part of the country, including the Senators from the region will on Monday storm Katsina for a three day retreat, to brainstorm on the way forward and take a common stand on the ongoing agitations for the restructuring of the country.
Speaking to our correspondent , the Chairman of the Northern Senators Forum (NSF), Senator Abdullahi Adamu, said the retreat which will commence on Monday, will also focus on how to improve the security situation in the northern part of Nigeria.
Recall that in the recent time, there has been agitations for the restructuring of the country, sequel to why the soauthern senators recently held a similar three day retreat in Calabar, the Cross River capital.
Over the period in consideration, there had been also recurrent clashes between herders and farmers, mostly in the northern part of the country, most of which resulted in the killing of innocent Nigerians.
According to Senator Adamu, the Forum has written letters of invitation to all the nineteen Northern Governors, including the leading traditional rulers, and top politicians and ex senators from the region to come and make presentations in the retreat, which he said would enable the senators as peoples representatives, take a common stand on restructuring.
In his word, “As scheduled, the retreat will take place in Kastina. It will commence, as follows with the arrival on Monday 11, and the opening ceremony will be on Tuesday 12, the retreat will go on to the end of Wednesday.
“It is expected that very important stakeholders will be attending. Northern governors will be attending in solidarity and very eminent traditional rulers will be attending, with his eminence the sultan of Sokoto Sa’ad Abubakar III.
“Essentially, we will be discussing the impact of budget in the north, the issue of restructuring which is now the main issue in politics, the issue of restructuring that the senate can develop position that canvass at the appropriate time and to have a good appreciation. It is part of preparing ourselves to face that challenge. The issue of security will also be discussed” he stressed.
According to him, “We represent the people and what we are hoping is that with the retreat, we are better educated, better placed to consider issues related on the subject matter, we are better prepared to face them and legislate and make laws over them for the good governance of Nigeria.
