From Ahmed Kaigama, Bauchi
The Northern Elders forum has condemned the impeachment of Adamawa state Governor, Retired Admiral Murtala Nyako , describing it as an attack on the country’s Constitution.
Speaking on behalf of the Forum, in an interview with journalists in Bauchi yesterday, Barrister Solomon Dalong said that the governor’s impeachment is an attack on the constitution in section 188 (1)-(9), there is no provision that will be circumvented.
According to him, the House members must have served the ousted governor directly and personally the notice of impeachment, not through any other means, even when they were guided by the acting Chief Judge over the ruling of the Supreme Court on serving notice of impeachment to Nyako.
“What has happened to us in Adamawa state is a real coup; when an elected governor was illegally removed from office; although, he still remains the Governor until section 188 of Nigeria’s Constitution is complied with” Dalong added.
Barrister Dalong said that the governor will seek for judicial intervention to re-claim his mandate without further harassment from any quarters, adding that the resignation of the deputy is a mere drama when it was addressed to the house instead of the governor, an act that will not even take place in animal kingdom.
The elder’s forum laments that the Adamawa political situation is a threat to the survival of nascent democracy, civilization and threat to the northern heritage when only few self-assertive individuals can carry such unconstitutional act.
He called on the people of Nigeria to be weary and not allow them to be distracted on the need for the peace, unity and corporate existence of the country.
