From Ahmed Kaigama, Bauchi

The Nigeria Medical Association (NMA) Bauchi state chapter, has reiterated its commitment on continuous awareness campaign to educate the general public on the Ebola virus prevention in order to save lives.

The Chairman, NMA Bauchi chapter, Dr. Muhammad Dauda Yusuf stated this at the rounding up of ‘Physicians week’, at Bununu community, Tafawa Balewa LGA, where it rendered free health-care services, and drugs with support from Reps member Bogoro, Dass and Tafawa Balewa constituency, Hon. Yakubu Dogara, at the weekend

The chairman said, “Despite the fact that the disease has been successfully combated in Nigeria, it is still not time for celebration as it is still a big issue in other countries with better health care facilities than Nigeria;

“We appeal to the public to remain watchful over Ebola threat globally and to observe safety advice on how to keep safe from the disease”

According to him, the public needs to be educated as there is no known cure, and no vaccine, adding that the best way to contain the outbreak is to educate people on prevention and in recognizing the symptoms early, as the risk of transmission is far lower in the early stages of the virus.

He further revealed that NMA would focus on raising public awareness about the disease, so that people could understand how the virus is transmitted, saying, “We know that by raising awareness on the symptoms of Ebola, we can both prevent and reduce the spread of this disease in Nigeria.”
