Nigeria records 7, 800 cases of drugs abuse daily -Expert

Nigeria have been recording 7, 800 cases of drug abuse on daily basis, as new entrance are introduced.
The President Health Promoters and Awareness Initiative, a Non-Governmental Organization, Malam Saraki Abubakar Musa stated this on Thursday in Bauchi while presenting lecture at the school awareness campaign on the dangers of drug abuse organized by ‘Gyara Kayanka Character Re-birth (GCR) Initiative’ at Bauchi state College of Agriculture.
Musa said , the recent research conducted on the prevalence of hard drugs abuse revealed that 7, 800 new cases are being recorded daily across the nation adding that 54 per cent of the drugs addicts are adolescent children from the age of 18 years downward.
He defined drugs abuse as the deliberate use of chemical substances for reasons other than intended medical substances which results in physical, mental, emotional or social impairment of the user.
Musa enumerated the drugs mostly abused to include tobacco, alcohol, synthetic drugs, ectasy, cocaine, crystal meth and methamphetamine, inhalants, heroin etc opined that peer pressure and depression are causes of drug addiction among youths.
“ Youth associate with different types of people otherwise known as friends. Through the pressure from these friends, a child may end up having a taste of these drugs and once this is done, they continue to take it and become addicted to it.”
“ In the long run, they are pushed to abuse drugs so as to fit in, escape or relax, relieve boredom, seem grown up, to rebel or to experiment.” He explained.
The Secretary of the GCR Initiative Mr Monday Daniel explained that the event was organized in consideration of the prevalence of drug addiction in tertiary institutions and secondly schools hence the decision by the NGO to come up with the sensitization campaign.
He said that the objectives of the ‘Gyara Kayanka Character Re-birth Initiative are awareness on drugs abuse, Public awareness and youth empowerment.
