Niger loses N5bn to flooding in 2018 – Commissioner

Niger State farmers have lost about N5 billion this year alone, the State Commissioner of Agriculture and Rural Development, Alhaji Haruna Nuhu Dukku has said.
Dukku disclosed this to journalists in Minna while briefing on the achievements of his ministry in the last three years of APC led administration of Governor Abubakar Sani Bello.
Dukku informed that the ministry has forwarded the report to the state governor for onward transfer to the federal government for assistance.
He said the state government has through Fadama distributed inputs like chemicals, seeds for dry season farming to recover some of their losses.
He stated that, the present administration in 2015 and 2016 procured 15,000 metric tonnes of NPK fertilizer at N855 million and 4,710 metric tonnes at N388 million, that is 300,000 and 94,200 bags respectively.
While in 2017 and 2018 the federal government special fertilizer intervention programme distributed 80,000 and 300,000 bags of fertilizers to the Niger state hence the state has registered over 20,000 farmers participating in the CBN Anchor Borrowers Programme.
The Commissioner further said that it has procured 130 tractors with implements, repairs 36 tractors, 50 units of threshers, five units of power tillers to rice farmers cooperatives as well 80 units of multipurpose grain threshers to enhanced mechanized farming in the state.
He stressed that the state government procured assorted grains at the cost of N250 million in 2016, while in 2017 procured N130,150,000 worth of grains and about N250 million in 2018 respectively.
Dukku also emphasized that the state government had continued to partner funded projects and programmes of various kind of agricultural programme like RAMP, VCDP, ATASP 1.
He again enumerated numerous achievements of FADAMA 111+ AF in the state that includes rehabilitation of rural roads, irrigation schemes, training of youths, construction of three Agricultural Equipment Hiring Enterprise and many others.
