Arrangements have been concluded for the training and empowerment of 291 women co-operative groups by the Niger state government, in collaboration with the Directorate of Special Projects, under Subsidy Re-investment Programme (SURE-P) at the sum of over N399 million.
Niger state Commissioner for Gender affairs and Social Development, Hajiya Hassana Adamu made this known at IBB Pen House, in Minna yesterday, saying that 2,910 women are to benefit from the programme as one in each of the political wards of the state were targeted.
Hassan noted that at the end of the training the government would distribute equipment and a total amount of N250,000 to each of the co-operative groups even as he said supervision and monitoring teams are in place for the success and judicious use of the funds and materials.
She disclosed that the co-operatives were properly screened to ascertain the authenticity of the benefiting groups as Niger state government and local governments shall finance the programme with 40% and 60% respectively.
The commissioner stated that they would embark on fish-farming, food processing, poultry farming and animal rearing, saying this was aimed at curbing gender disparity, fight poverty and create jobs.
