Niger Devt Plan will address challenges of urbanisation -Emir

The Emir of Suleja, Alhaji Awwal Ibrahim has said that the effort by the Niger State Governor, Alhaji Abubakar Sani Bello to formulate an Integrated Development Plan (IDP) for Minna and Suleja cities will surely address the challenges of urbanisation in the two cities especially in Suleja.
He stated this when he received a delegation from the United Nations Habitat on Formulation of IDP for Niger State and the Niger State Urban Support Programme (SUP) on a courtesy visit led by Mr Michael Kinyanjui, Regional Metropolitan Officer, UN- Habitat and Prof. Mustapha Zubairu, Coordinator, SUP at his palace in Suleja yesterday.
The royal father described Suleja as a fast growing city that was becoming populated as a result of its proximity to the federal capital , hence the need to have a policy that will guide the urbanisation process of the city for sustainability.
The emir enjoined to government to ensure the success of the project and pledged the emirate contributions toward the successful implementation of the project.
Earlier, Michael Kinyanjui, Regional Metropolitan Officer, disclosed that the UN-Habitat is supporting Niger State government to formulate an IDP for Minna and Suleja cities on how best they can manage urbanisation with their resources.
He noted that the project had four components such as; preparation of the state urban policy, formulation of an integrated development plans for Minna and Suleja.
Micheal said other components we’re to prepare a plan for developing a Smart New Town in Suleja and strengthen and build capacity of the state institutions in charge of development and management of cities.
Similarly, Ms Rossana Poblet, Consultant for IDP Formulation in Niger, said the concept of IDP was to link the urban areas with rural areas to bring about development of the state.
In his remarks, the Secretary to the State Government, Alhaji Ahmed Ibrahim Matane who was represented by Alhaji Baba Wachiko, Permanent Secretary, Economic Affairs, commended the role of the emir in mobilising the people of the emirate to participate in the project.
He described the project as” people’s driven and said that the structure and formulation of the project involves every sector of life.
