The National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) has condemned the barbaric and senseless murder of students at a federal government college in Buniyadi, Gujba local government area of Yobe state by terrorist group.
A statement by the chief press officer, Fatimah Agwai Mohammed, said the Executive Secretary of NHRC, Prof. Ben Angwe said the killing of these innocents students was dastardly and horrific.
Against this background, the statement expressed the readiness of the commission to continue to work with the relevant authorities in the country towards bringing peace and reconciliation in the region to avoid further violations of people’s rights in the area; even as it called for those responsible to be made to face an open and transparent trial in a court of competent jurisdiction.
Angwe said, “The commission has been proactive in human rights monitoring, protection and promotion and will do everything within its mandate to ensure that Nigerians whose rights are violated can have redress through the commission”.
He called on the relevant authorities to urgently put machinery in place to ensure that the families of those who survived the attack and those of the deceased are given the necessary social and economic support in order for them not to suffer further human rights violations.
