The Executive Secretary of the National Health Insurance Scheme (NHIS), Dr. Femi Thomas said that the Scheme is presently going through a major transformational phase in its bid to achieve its statutory mandate of ensuring that Nigerians enjoyed easy access to effective healthcare.
This was contained in a statement issued by the NHIS Head of Media and Public Relations Division, Ayo Osinlu said the Executive Secretary after a recent advocacy visit to the governor of Ondo state, Dr. Olusegun Mimiko, at the government House, Akure.
According to him, the transformation includes the on-going restructuring and creation of more departments in the scheme, to strengthen it for more efficient discharge of its duties.
Dr. Thomas used the occasion to reel out strategies his administration has developed for the accomplishment of universal health coverage in the country.
Some of these strategies according to him, “include the complete digitalization of the various operations and processes within the Scheme, which will include the use of biometric registration of enrolees in all our operations to guarantee the accuracy and integrity of our database”.
Responding, the executive governor of Ondo State, Dr. Olusegun Mimiko, noted that there must be equity in the distribution of health resources between the vulnerable and those who can pay for health services in the country.
