The Nigeria Football Federation, NFF has blamed the ravaging Coronavirus also referred to as COVID-19 as the reason the federation has not appointed a substantive coach for the Super Falcons.
NFF President, Amaju Pinnick gave the excuse Monday while guesting on a television programme.
The Super Falcons are currently without a substantive coach after its former handler, Thomas Dennerby left the position unceremoniously half way into Nigeria’s quest to pick 2020 Olympics ticket in 2019.
Dennerby who led the ladies to their 9th Africa Women’s Cup of Nations, AWCON in December 2018 in Ghana and to Round of 16 finish at the 2019 FIFA Women’s World Cup in France, left his position in September last year citing interference by the federation into his work as one of the reasons for his vacating the position.
Falconets coach, Christopher Danjuma was drafted in to lead the team in their Olympics qualifying matches against Ivory Coast, a hurdle a disjointed Falcons unfortunately failed to cross.
Answering questions on the employment of a new coach for the nine-time Africa champions, Pinnick said, “We should have had that done already, but for the situation we are in right now. There are lots of top coaches who applied and we are excited about that.”
My Pinnick who was last year removed as CAF 1st Vice President, said the NFF is making plans to host Super Falcon of 1999 but said the federation is unsure when the event would hold this year
“In Nigeria also we were meant to celebrate the 1999 set of the Super Falcons at our own NFF/AITEO Awards, we are not sure when we can have that program this year. Aiteo one of our major sponsors is even affected by Oil prices slump. We will take some difficult decisions.
On the federation’s activities during the COVID-19 period, Pinnick said “It has been a time for us to reflect, redirect and refocus. Meditate and do what we believe is right. We have been chatting on our WhatsApp group and ideas are being shared.”
