From Ahmed Idris Birnin Kebbi
The Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission (NERC) has commissioned a forum office in Birnin kebbi the state capital of Kebbi State to mediate between Kaduna Electricity Distribution Company and customer in the state.
Speaking at the occasion, the state Deputy Governor Alhaji Samaila Yombe Dabai said the creation of the forum office is a welcome development as the idea would go a long way in ensuring that customers are given value for their money.
He noted that Senator Atiku Abubakar Bagudu has made it possible that the state enjoined 24 hours uninterrupted electricity supply, adding that efforts were been made to ensure that other parts of the state are also carried along in this gesture.
Speaking earlier, the NERC Commissioner, Consumer Affairs Division Dr.Moses Arigu said the idea of establishing the forum office was to play a supervisory role between the consumers’ and the Kaduna Electricity Distribution Company in order to ensure good energy service.
He explained that the office would serve as a complaint outfit where any customer can walk in and lay his grievances or poor services rendered to him by the electricity body.
He added that “Customers can first of all channel their complaint to the KEDCO district office and, if nothing is been done he can now come to the forum office and lodge his or her complaint where it would be entertained with all seriousness”
Arigu, however, disclosed that similar offices were to be commissioned in Sokoto and Zamfara for effective coverage of the zone.
In his remarks, the Managing Director of Kaduna Electricity Distribution Company Eng Garba Haruna, disclosed that the company is running the business at loss as many consumers in the zone are not willing to pay for consumption.
According to him, the zone has over five hundred thousand consumers but less than two hundred thousand were registered as customers who redeem their tariff at the end of the month.
He lamented that despite the 24 hours uninterrupted supply, yet people are not willing to pay.
Haruna called on people to report any one found engaged in such act of sabotage while a law would soon be promulgated to penalize erring persons.
