From Alice Ajakaye, Lagos

The National Conscience Party (NCP) Lagos chapter has called for the immediate conduct of election in all Local Government Areas in Lagos State without further delay.

The party’s national general secretary, Mr Ayodele Akele made this known in a press conference held at the party’s secretarial in Ikeja, adding that elections in local government offices in lagos State were due.

Mr Akele stated that the indefinite postponement of the election by Lagos State Independent Electoral Commission (LASIEC) was on called for, because the body has commenced plans for the election over two years ago.

He said that the chairman of LASIEC has no excuses whatsoever to postpone the election, as adequate funds has been give to them to conduct the election, adding that LASIEC is in “conspiracy with the ruling APC, not to conduct elections for the fear of losing many local government in the state.

Mr. Akele instigated that the Lagos State government, LASIEC and Lagos State House of Assembly should within seven days put all necessary machinery in motion to conduct the 2014 local government election in Lagos State otherwise there will be a legal action against the Lagos State government and LASIEC.

Among their demands includes “Elections into all the LGAs must hold in Lagos state, the chairman of LASIEC must resign his appointment forthwith over his open contradiction and shameless display of bias, partisanship and absolute dereliction of duties and autonomy of local government administration from state governor’s dictatorships, imposition and strangulations so that true dividends of democratic benefit can be seen to be really touching the people at the grassroots and rural areas,” Mr Akele noted.

Meanwhile, in an interview with the state chairman of NCP, Mr. Fatai Ibuowo said the reason behind postponement without consultation of local government election by Lagos State is because they want to keep enjoying the benefit of leadership.
