NCC harps on need to protect Telecoms infrastructure

The Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) had emphasised the importance of protecting telecommunications infrastructure to ensure quality of services.
The Director, Zonal Operation, NCC, Mrs Amina Shehu made this known at a sensitisation programme on the protection of Telecoms infrastructure in Obajana Kogi State.
Represented by Mrs Khadigah Principal Manager Zonal Operation Department Shehu said that the workshop was a platform to enlighten the public and other stakeholders on the need to protect Telecoms infrastructure.
She said that the workshop was also intended to present a platform for cooperation between stakeholders in the telecommunication industry to reach an understanding towards putting into proper perspective the concerns most often expressed by public about Telecoms infrastructure.
“”The programme is an initiative of NCC aimed at sensitising the stakeholders as well as creating awareness about the importance of telecom infrastructure in our domain.
“Telecoms infrastructure such as Base Stations and other facilities have been target of vandalism, theft and hostility from host communities.
“It is therefore imperative for the public to regard telecom facilities as “collectively owned infrastructure that are crucial and essential for the provision of efficient and acceptable quality of service and ought to be keenly protected.
She said that vandalism of telecom infrastructure has continued to be a major challenge in the industry adding that however the commission has continued to collaborate with relevant agencies to ensure adequate security for the facilities.
Shehu said that the commission attention in recent time had been drawn to rising public concerns regarding alleged likely negative health effects of Electromagnetic Frequency radiation emanating from Telecom infrastructure.
According to her, those negative concerns about this subject have in some cases led to interference and or agitation against deployment of required infrastructure to the detriment of delivering of quality Telecom services in the country.
In response to these growing concerns and commitment to public safety, NCC through Zonal Operations Department deems it necessary as one of its core functions to organise enlighten people.
Also Mr Lawal Bello, Manager Technical Standard and Network Integrity Department, NCC also emphasised the importance of protection of Telecom infrastructure
Bello said that quality of service depends on these infrastructure so there was need to protect them.
According to him, telecom operators cannot continue to deploy their infrastructure if they are not protected.
“”There is urgent need to consider ways to protect these infrastructure to ensure quality and efficient network service.
“His Royal Highness Idowu Isenibi, Oba of Obajana111commended NCC for the initiative to educate stakeholders and create awareness on protection of Telecom infrastructure.
Isenibi said that Obajana community needs such programmes as this to enlighten them.
“Vandalism is one of the setbacks of development of any community so we should put our heads together to push it out of our domain.
“We to also use this opportunity to call on telecom operators to also extend their Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) to assist the people of this community.
