Nasrawa LG polls: APC appeals to PDP dominated Assembly for restraint

From Ali Abare Abubakar, Lafia.

Following developments in the wake of the recently conducted local government election in Nasarawa, the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) has appealed to the state Assembly, dominated by members of the opposition Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), to show restraints in its conduct.

Arc Stanley Buba, interim state APC chairman, made the call recently while addressing a press conference at the secretariat of the party in Lafia.

The APC said it has become necessary to address the press as a result of unfolding political developments occasioned by the conduct of the council polls, stressing that it has also become necessary to disabuse the minds of detractors who thought the election would be another charade as was the case before.

He lauded Governor Umaru Tanko Al-makura for the prompt swearing in of the ten chairmen declared by the Nasarawa Independent Electoral Commission (NASIEC), in which the APC has six while the PDP got four.

Stanley however expressed dismay over what he said was an emerging trend with the PDP arrogating to itself the power of an electoral body by announcing that it won 12 out of the 13 local government areas of the state.

“More disturbing, despite the announcement by NASIEC and subsequent swearing-in of the chairmen, the PDP controlled Assembly, in clear violation of the rules of the House, constituted itself into an election petition tribunal”, the APC chairman said.

The APC chairman described as illegal the directive from the Assembly for the chairman of NASIEC to declare the PDP as winner in the remaining three local government areas, Akwanga, Obi and Nasarawa, which election have been earlier declared by NASIEC as inconclusive.

“The APC views this action of the PDP and its members in the Assembly as an invitation to anarchy since they no longer have respect for the rule of law and due process”, Stanley said.

While appealing to party supporters in the state to remain calm and law abiding as true democrats that they are, Stanley urged the lawmakers to show restraints and respect the sanctity of the hallowed chambers in the discharge of their duties within the limit of their legislative competence so as not to unnecessarily overheat the polity.
