Ahead of the 2015 governorship election contest in Nasarawa State, the Coalition of Youth Associations (CYA) has rejected purported endorsement of former Information Minister, Labaran Maku, by the National Youth Council of Nigeria (NYCN) to be the governorship candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in the state.
To this end, the youth coalition declared their support for Yusuf Agabi, saying he has demonstrated remarkable interest in the wellbeing of youths, adding that he has been able to employ over ten thousand youths through his Agabi Foundation.
“We decided therefore to present Dr. Agabi who has been our saving grace over the years. His NGO; Agabi Foundation, has provided over ten thousand jobs for the teaming youths and women in the state”, a statement signed by its CYA Coordinator, Sani Abdulahi Keema, said.
It said the need to issue the statement was sequel to the decision by the National Youth Council of Nigeria (NYCN), Nasarawa State chapter, to endorse Labaran Maku to become the PDP Governorship candidate for the state in 2015, saying the purported endorsement is a “blatant lie, counterproductive and uncalled for”.
“As concerned youths with bright future, we have resolved to distance ourselves from the initial claim by NYSC, Nasarawa State Chapter, have desired Dr. Yusuf Agabi as our candidate for the PDP in Nasarawa State”, CYA said.
It said the resolution to support the governorship aspiration of Yusuf Agabi, was arrived at after an extra ordinary meeting held by the NYCN in Savannah Hotels, Lafia, on October 26, during which all the youth leaders resolved to propose and endorse Agabi, since his track record has proven to be a man of vision.
“Since the inception of the APC administration in the state, having used all the available arsenals at our disposal to bring in Al-makura, we have since been neglected and disposed of by been denied access to employment, scholarship and appointmet to positions of trust”, according to the youth coalition.
Speaking further, CYA said that the NYCN which endorsed Labaran Maku has questionable integrity, saying even though CYA still remains an integral part of the NYCN, the decision of the chairman of NYCN to adopt Maku as its candidate is his personal position.
“If free, fair and credible primaries are held, we shall be vindicated at the end of the primaries if our party is ken in winning back Nasarawa State, Agabi must be supported and given the party’s ticket to run for the governorship position in the state”, CYA said.
