Yobe state Governor, Alh. (Dr.) Ibrahim Gaidam has inaugurated a Yobe state chapter of 25 member conflict mitigation and management regional council, a peace initiative organ founded by the Interfaith Mediation Center (IMC).

The IMC is a voluntary, non-governmental, non-political, non-financial interest organization founded by religious leaders that seeks to foster mutual respect and tolerance in religious populations by encouraging deeper reflection on the tenets of one’s own Muslim or Christian faith and greater knowledge of the faith of others.

Inaugurating the council at the GAAT Hotel in Damaturu the state capital, the state governor, represented by his deputy, Engr. Abubakar D. Aliyu commended the efforts of the IMC for conceiving what he called “a noble initiative”.

“This effort I believe is one of the surest ways of creating a common understanding of our problems, a means of forging a common sense of belonging and ultimately banishing all forms of antagonism and suspicion.

He stressed that the security situation and other threats in the north-east sub region, the north and indeed Nigeria, constitutes a serious challenge to the realization of set dreams and desires for peace and prosperity that needs to be tackled with all seriousness.

“The wanton destruction of lives and properties visited on ordinary peace loving and law abiding citizens by criminally motivated gangsters under the guise of ethnic and religious motives calls for concerted action, exposure, trial and punishment,” Gaidam said.

He therefore declared that his administration would give the council all necessary support and cooperation to enable it discharge its assigned task successfully, and so advised the council to synergize with the Yobe state ministry of religious affairs which also coordinates and mediates among faith based organizations in the state.

Earlier, while reviewing the IMC project, Imam, Dr. Ashafa revealed that the three specific objectives of the council includes, deepening faith in order to deepen understandings of peace, to enhance trust and relationship building and to strengthen early warning and early response.

He stated that the target audience includes religious and traditional leaders, youth and women groups, the media, professional bodies, civil society organizations, government agencies and security agencies among others.
