From Mike Etim, Uyo
A mother of 4, Mrs. Salomi Awoni has said that the negligence displayed by officials of the Akwa Ibom Sector Command of the Federal Road Safety Commission (FRSC), by not acting urgently to remove a broken down MACK truck wrongly parked at the foot of an over-head bridge, was responsible for the death of her husband who crashed his car on the truck unknowingly.
The Late Mr. Awoni died yesterday at University of Uyo Teaching Hospital (UUTH), following severe injuries sustained when his Honda Pilot SUV Jeep crashed into the MAC truck on the speed lane on the foot or the Abak road flyover leading to Uyo, the Akwa Ibom state capital, while descending from the bridge on Wednesday.
An irate mob at the accident scene had attacked on the FRSC officials when they arrived the scene of the accident five hours later, after they were informed through phone calls that a car had crashed into the truck with the driver trapped inside.
When contacted on the incident, the Public Relations Officer (PRO) of the Akwa Ibom FRSC, Godsgift Uwen, had said that the deceased, Mr. Awoni was a drunk driver, which according to him, led to the accident.
However, debunking Uwen’s claim that the husband was drunk at the time of the accident, the deceased’s wife, Mrs. Awoni, who was in tears while speaking to journalists at her home, said, “My husband just went out to eat something that evening; he had closed from work and wanted to get something when he ran into the truck“.
