Minna Jail break: 211 inmates still on the run, 64 re-arrested

211 inmates,of the 270 inmates freed by gunmen that invaded the Medium Prison, Minna, Niger state, are still on the run, while 64 of them have been re-arrested, even as 48 of the inmates refused to leave the prison after the attack.
The Controller-General of Prisons, Peter Ezenwa Ekpendu made the disclosure in Minna Today, while briefing journalists after his assessment of the situation in the prison, saying that he has directed the re- deployment of 55 officers of Nigerian Prison Service from its zonal office to boost the security at both new and old prisons in Minna, to curb future occurrence of such ugly situation.
He noted that, investigation is on-going and anyone found wanting in the report will face the full weight of the law, explaining that the report showed that, there was no insider attack and that it was not connected to the Boko Haram insurgency.
Describing the situation as “unfortunate, embarrassing and unacceptable, less than 24 hours he took over as the Controller-General, he said the security challenges will be tackled head-on, to restore sanity in the system.
The CG Prisons commended the effort of Niger state Police Command and other security operative for their support in re-arresting some of the escapees.
It could recalled that 270 inmates escaped when some armed men attacked the Minna Medium Prison, the capital city of Niger state, leading to the escape of at least 275 inmates out of 323 prisoners.

Confirming the development at the prison, the state Police Commissioner, Mr. Olusola Amore told journalists on Saturday that the Police in the state have arrested 4 out of those that escaped, of which 2 have returned to the prison.
He also said 4 AK 47guns and a Sienna car were recovered and currently in the custody of the police, adding that efforts are on to arrest the prisoners that escaped.
