The Federal Ministry of Environment has postponed the date for the celebration of this year’s National Environmental Sanitation Day (NESD) to July 12.
Mrs Rita Okea, Assistant Chief Environmental Health Officer in the ministry, said yesterday in Abuja that this was to allow the new Minister of Environment, Mrs Laurentia Mallam, to participate effectively.
The event which commenced in 2005 is celebrated annually on June 28.
According to Okea, the two-day event would commence with a road walk on July 11, while the main event would be held on July 12 in Lokoja, the Kogi capital.
She recalled that Oyo State hosted the 2013 edition of the event that aimed at ensuring grassroots participation.
“Over the years, the celebration of the National Environmental Sanitation Day holds in the Federal Capital Territory.
“But the ministry has since last year decided to move it round the states of the federation for better impact on the grassroots.’’
Okea noted that subsequently the event would go round all the states, depending on the willingness of state governments to host it.
The event is aimed at promoting healthy living amongst the populace through awareness creation and reward for innovative best practices in environmental sanitation. NAN
