As part of the efforts to ensure that over populated inmates congested in prison across the country minister of state for Power, Works and Housing Suleman Zarma has released 35 inmates serving jail term in different offences.
The minister while releasing the inmates at Gombe prison yesterday said their released was aimed at freeing them in order to be useful in the society.
He said among them they are inmates who are not indigent of the state but added that their release is paramount to enable them reunite with their families.
Speaking further, the minister said over populated of inmates in prisons across the country is alarming which he said capacity of inmates in prison should not be more than 400 saying that the number of inmates in Gombe prison has increased to 1000.
He appreciated the effort of President Buhari for his visit to Kano state which according to him released some inmates at Kano prison.
While commending the President, the minister called on meaning Nigerians not to relent in giving their support to free inmates with minor offences.
He however stressed government commitment which he said they are working hard to ensure an enable environment for inmates in prisons.
The minister said with the support from individuals will assist in reducing over population of inmates and that will help government of spending much on feeding.
