Taraba State acting governor, Alhaji Garba UmarBy Lawrence Olaoye

Acting governor of Taraba state, Alhaji Garba Umar yesterday said the medical panel set up to examine the state of health of his buss, Danbaba Suntai, was not to remove him.

Umar made this clarification in Abuja at the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) national secretariat when he paid a courtesy call on the leadership of the party

He said, “I’ve heard people say the motive behind the setting up of the panel is to remove the governor. This is not true. It is merely intended to determine if I can hand over to him or not.”

The Acting governor appreciated the party leadership for their support, which he said has greatly help to stabilise the state. He however added that the second return of Suntai from medical trip has once again thrown up tension in the state.

According to him, “your timely intervention, guidance and counsels have helped us greatly since the unfortunate air incident involving my boss, the Executive Governor of Taraba State, His Excellency, Governor Danbaba Danfulani Suntai on the 25th of October, 2012.

“Worthy of note is a high-powered delegation of our party led by Distinguished Senator Hope Uzodinma to douse the tension generated by the first return of Governor Danbaba Suntai from a medical trip in August 2013.

“The state of affairs in our state has generally been stable since the intervention as His Excellency Governor Suntai continue to receive medical care within and outside the country. As can be clearly seen over this period, the medical condition of Governor Suntai is improving. And we are waiting for the doctors to certify him fit to resume his duties.

“As you must have noticed, we have once again stepped into a tensed situation occasioned by the second return of His Excellency, Governor Danbaba Suntai from treatment abroad. The insistence by a powerful bloc on the state that I handover to my boss even among professional advice is at the centre of the current impasse.

“This has forced the State Executive Council to request the State House of Assembly to set up a medical panel to verify the state of health of our beloved governor. I’ve heard people say the motive behind the setting up of the panel is to remove the governor. This is not true. It is merely intended to determine if I can hand over to him or not”, he stated.

Responding, the deputy National Chairman of PDP, Uche Secondus, who was on ground to receive him, said that the effort of the Acting Governor was commendable.

He advised the Acting governor to continue to maintain peace with stakeholders in the state especially now that primaries are coming.

“Power comes from God and we want to continue to hear good news from your state,” he said.
