The newly posted Commissioner of Police in Kebbi state, Mr. Sotonye L. Wakama, has described the media as an important tool in the fight against crime in the country and as such the paramount need for cordial relationship with the Police.
The new CP, who stated this on Wednesday, while on a visit to the Correspondent’s Chapel, Kebbi state, adding that media, being an important stakeholders in the fight against crime must be accorded due cooperation and support especially from the Police who has primary responsibility of fighting crimes and maintaining peace in the country.
He also added that as the 2015 election is around the corner, it was equally important to combine effort with the press as the watch dog of the society to monitor how elections are conducted through unbiase reportage of political events as they unfold, promising to operate open door policy between the press and the Police.
Earlier on, the state Chairman of NUJ, Alh. Mohammed Tukur expressed his delight on behalf of Journalist in the state for the visit by the CP, pointing out that ‘’ This singular act of visiting us in our office demonstrates how the CP recognises the importance of Press and also portrays how the new CP intends to foster cordial relationship with the Press in the state’’ he said.
Tukur appealed to the CP to see journalists in Kebbi as partners in progress and do not hesitate to invite them or seek for their support in areas of information dissemination as well as intelligence sharing.
Also in his remarks, the Chairman of Correspondent Chapel, Dauda Shehu commended the CP for being the first CP in Kebbi to visit the Press in their office, hoping that the synergy between the two parties will continue.
