From Uche Nnorom, Makurdi
Wife of Benue State Governor, Mrs. Eunice Ortom, has decried the high prevalence of unimmunized children against measles in Nigeria.
Mrs. Ortom noted at a one day women stakeholders meeting on health in Makurdi yesterday that World Health Organization (WHO) survey showed that Nigeria ranked highest globally in measles infection.
She explained that the stakeholders meeting was convened to seek strategies on reduction of the infection in the state, maintaining that women were strategically placed to enhance the outcome and tame the high rate of the infection.
She said: “As mothers, we are life builders. So, we would not want our children to suffer from measles that would take their lives away. Therefore, we have a role to play in ensuring reduction and even possible, completely eliminate measles. It is achievable.”
She called for sensitization, supervision of all strata of the state in ensuring success of the immunization exercise slated for between 8th-20th February, 2018.
Chairman of Konshisha Mrs. Mwuese Ujege pledged to provide the needed support towards the success of the immunization exercise across the local government areas.
Over 972,000 children representing 72 percent are targeted to be immunized in Benue.
