Governor Aminu Masari of Katsina state has decried the high rate of drug abuse among women in the society.
Masari stated this yesterday in Katsina during the distribution of empowerment materials to 2,500 women in the state.
‘’Report reaching us indicated that you find out that during ceremonies about 50 per cent of women have one type of drugs or the other contained inside their bags.
‘’The situation is becoming alarming, some of them say that they drug to get out of sadness they might find themselves.
‘’Drug abuse for a period of time is never a solution to a problem because of sadness, the religion taught us what to do in such situations,’’ he said.
Masari, therefore, stressed the need for parents, husbands and other stakeholders to join hands with government to address the menace in the society.
He urged parents and husbands do something about that; and monitor their activities.
He also urged parents to be checking mobile phones of their daughters with a view of preventing them from using them to commit vices like adultery by watching prohibited films.
The governor said that the state government would continue to accord women and youth empowerment a top priority.
In her remarks, the Special Assistant to the Governor on Women Empowerment, Hajiya Bilkisu Saulawa, said that 2,500 women would receive empowerment materials.
She said that the women would also be given equipment like sewing machines, spaghetti making machines, knitting machines, grinding machines among others.
Saulawa added that N5,000 would also be given to all the beneficiaries to enable them start the business.
She also urged them to collect their Voter Registration Cards to enable them vote for the governor during the 2019 election.
