An Abuja Senior Magistrates’ Court yesterday sentenced one Sadey Anani, 30, to one year in prison for stealing a bicycle valued at N120, 000.
The convict was arraigned on one count charge of theft before Senior Magistrate Zubairu Mohammed.
Mohammed convicted Anani after he pleaded guilty to stealing a bicycle belonging to Mallam Muazu Abdullahi of Jabi FCT Abuja.
The senior magistrate did not give him an option to pay fine.
The magistrate said he hoped that the punishment would serve as deterrent to others “who are nursing same intentions’’.
Earlier, the prosecutor, Insp. BitrusAudu, told the court that Abdullahi lodged a report against the convict at the Life Camp Police Station on March. 17.
Audu said that on March 12, the complainant was at Jabi Lake Park and was doing his usual morning exercise riding the bicycle when the convict approached him to borrow the bicycle.
He said the complainant gave the bicycle to the convict and he absconded with it.
He said that during police interrogation the convict admitted to selling the bicycle for N12, 000.The prosecutor said the convict refused to disclose the whereabouts of the person he sold the bike to.
The convict, who pleaded for leniency, said it was the devil that pushed him to commit the crime.
“As from today, I have changed my ways. I will not do it again.’’ (NAN)
