The House of Representatives yesterday discovered that after 40 years of conception of the Mambilla power projects and billions of Naira spent, the site of the project is still unknown, despite N2.5 billion Naria budgeted in 2019 for compensations.
The lawmakers on Thursday in a budget session were told that the federal government in collaboration with the Taraba State government was yet to survey the site of the project.
However, compensations have been paid out over the years. To whom? The lawmakers wanted to know.
The Minister, Engr. Sale Mamman, who claimed to be new, could not provide an answer, neither could his Permanent Secretary, Louis Edozien who is the Chief Adviser, Administrative Head and Accounting Officer of the Ministry.
Surprisingly, the committee headed by Rep Aliyu Magaji approved the budget. “The 2020 budget is hereby approved,” he said.
According to the Permanent Secretary of the Ministry Louis Edozien, the projects were conceived 40 years ago and the cost presently stands at an estimated $5.73 billion.
According to the ministry, out of the appropriated sum of N12.5 billion only N8.6 billion has been released between January to October 2019 releases which stood at 70%.
For the 2020 budget, the figure presented stood at N9.4 billion. Despite the unsatisfactory presentation the committee went ahead and approved the 2020 budget. “The 2020 budget is hereby approved,” Magaji remarked.
