The FCT Minister, Malam Muhammad Musa Bello has charged staff and management of the newly commissioned Aso Television to develop content that will promote the unity of Nigeria, which the FCT symbolizes as well as promote the developmental agenda of the Administration.
Bello said FCT more than ever, needs its institutions to bridge the gaps on issues that tend to divide the people, and help to build a strong, virile and stable society.
The Minister gave this charge yesterday , at the official commissioning of ASO Television studio, an arm of the Abuja Broadcasting Corporation (ABC), a media outfit of the FCT Administration.
He recalled that one of the dispositions of his administration on assumption almost four years ago is the repositioning of ABC and make it more relevant and worthwhile to the people of the FCT.
He however added that the journey for the television began much earlier in 2004when the license was obtained, with broadcast set to begin in 2007, which was not to be due to a number of factors.
According to him, “ it is heartwarming to see that this long drawn out project is finally set to begin full operations. It has taken a decade and a half to get us to this stage and I therefore expect you to hit the ground running.
“ The FCT Administration has expended a lot of resources to get it (ASO Television) on its feet, and you (staff and management) should therefore justify the confidence reposed in you.
“ You must also work hard to make this station economically viable, so that it sustains itself.”
Similarly, the Minister of Information and Culture, Alhaji Lai Mohammed, who performed the official commissioning of the station, urged the management to be self regulatory while striving to promote national unity.
He assured that the Federal Government will not censor nor gag the media, but those who manage information must endeavour to shun fake news and propagation of hate speech.
He noted that the present administration of President Muhammadu Buhari has shown the readiness to allow the media a free hand, but must not promote the dissemination of fake news and hate speech that could destabilize national security and unity.
Earlier in his welcome address, ABCL Board Chariman, Malam Farouk Muhammed said although the television station is readyto commence full transmission and increase gradually, but “ we cannot do so until some of the broadcast tools are supplied.
“ We hope the process of financial I would be expedited to enable Aso TV to start operating as a full commercial entity of the Government.”
The Board Chariman therefore thanked the FCT Minister for consistent support to the Corporation and for taking the historic step of commissioning the television arm of the company.
