A labourer, Danjuma Obadiah, is to spend three years in prison for extortion, after he pleaded guilty to a three-count charge of joint act, theft and extortion.

An Abuja Senior Magistrates’ court, presided over by Senior Magistrate, Mr. Abdullateef Abolaji, convicted Obadiah, 25, of Old Karmo village, Abuja, accordingly.

Abolaji, who did not give Abdullahi an option to pay a fine, said “the high rate of extortion in the FCT has been startling.

“The court is punishing you with a prison term to serve as deterrent to people of such character.’’

The Prosecutor, Mr. Philip Appolos, prayed for a compensation of N89, 000 to the complainant from the convict as balance of N150, 000 out of which N61, 000 was recovered from him.

Appolos had earlier told the court that, Barr. Joy Otowo, of Gwarinpa Estate, Abuja, reported the matter to the Life Camp police station, Abuja, on December 29. 2012.

He said that on the said date, the complainant was driving along Airport Road and she slowed down at a speed breaker by BAZE University junction.

He said that the convict and two others now at large, ran out of a nearby bush and swiftly snatched her hand bag from the car.

Appolos said the content of the bag included the sum of N150, 000, gold trinkets, International passport and other valuable items.

He said the convict and his accomplice ran back into the bush but Obadiah was later arrested by the police officers on crime prevention control.

He added that N61, 000 was recovered from the convict during police interrogation. (NAN
