The Kwara State Commissioner of Police, Mr. Salihu Garuba has vowed to arrest any politician in the state that carries firearms or dangerous weapons during preparations for 2015 general elections.
The Police boss in the state who stated this while speaking at a security meeting with political stakeholders in Ilorin at the weekend, said the state police command would not tolerate proliferation of firearms.
He said: “We are not going to give anybody permit to carry guns. We would not allow anyone to kill us. If you have disagreement with your opponent there is a better way to settle it through the ballot. And if you have cars with factory-fitted tinted glasses, please come and obtain official permit so that you can use it”, he said.
While speaking against speculation that police command was planning to embark on indiscriminate arrest of politicians in the state during the general elections, the police boss said only those that ferment trouble would be arrested.
“We are not planning to arrest people indiscriminately. I am a human being and I would not like my liberty to be tampered with unnecessarily. Please let’s talk to our children and wards not to be used by politicians as political thugs. If you do not commit any offence, walahi talahi, Garuba will not arrest or detain anybody. I started my police career here in Ilorin in 1981 and I want to assure you that there is no plan to arrest people anyhow before, during or after the elections.
“Drivers’ unions should talk to their members not to involve themselves in any act of violence. Permission for rallies and campaigns by police is based on first come first serve and to avoid clashes, two parties campaigning on same day will not bee allowed.
“On the day of election, people should respect the restriction order. We are not supporting any party but please warn your wards not to do anything that will jeopardise the peace of the state”, he said.
The police boss also called on people to use their phones to supply information to the command, saying, “I am happy that Ilorin is changing from the previous years as people are now giving us credible information which we are working upon and it is yielding results”.
