By Stanley Onyekwere

The Satellite Towns Development Department (STDD) has expressed its resolve to intensify construction and upgrading of rural roads within the Territory.
In particular, the STDD declared readiness to carry out intervention works on roads in Kwaita- Yebu communities in kuje Area Council of the FCT.
According to the STDD Director, Engineer Felix Nwankwo, who gave the assurance, it was in response to recent complaints from the people of Kuje, calling for prompt intervention on roads in their area.
Nwankwo, who is overseeing the affairs of STDD explained that Kwaita- Yebu road going by the Abuja Master Plan is a Secondary road that connects Kwaita to Kwaku, covering a distance of 30km.
He said the road was awarded in 2004 to a local Contractor Messer’s Abdek with a finishing of surface dressing and one number bridge, but stoping at Yebu, which is a total length of 25km.
He revealed that the Contractor commenced work and has completed some section of the road but because the finished surface dressed road has a life span of 10 years, most of the completed section have been washed out including earthwork.
The STDD boss said the Department is currently seeking for approval for the upgrading of the same Road to be included in the 2020 statutory budget.
He said: “As soon as there is an approval of its inclusion on 2020 budget by the National Assembly, the project will be procured and awarded to a contractor who will handle it.
“The road upon completion after the upgrading will be Asphaltic with concrete lined drain at important locations which has a longer life span.”
He therefore reiterated that the FCT Administration is very much aware of the state of the roads; and is also very concerned about the satellite towns’ infrastructure and will do everything possible to ensure that they receive the necessary attention they deserve.
