Mozum Cultural Development Association (MCDA) has accused security personnel deployed to the area to keep peace between warring Bassa-Komu and Egbura ethnic group of providing cover for Bassa-Komu militia to operate unhindered.
Mozum is a Chiefdom of Egbura ethnic group under Bassa LGA of Kogi state.
Speaking through a Press Release issued by its President, Abubakar Abdullahi, the group accused Bassa-Komu ethnic group of attacking Egbura of Mozum community last Monday unchallenged by the security personnel deployed to the area.
According to the statement, the attacks on Mozum was carried out simultaneously with that of Ketechi where houses and other properties belonging to Egburas were either burnt to ashes or carted away by the Bassa Komu militia.
In the attacks, the group alleged that one Shaibu Abubakar was also killed in Oguma, the headquarters of the LGA allegedly despite the presence of security operative in the location.
It further said: “Several persons are still missing and unaccounted for as a result of the attacks on Mozum led by one Nyinagba Kaku from Akakana Village.”
The group complained that despite the fact that these attacks were carried out in broad day light with security personnel not far away, no arrest had been made.
Insisting that those behind the carnage were known to the authorities, it said “We are aware that the burning of Houses in Sheria was coordinated by the leadership of Bassa-Komu Cultural Development Association (BCDA) under the leadership of Mr. Egbi Nyizoma.”
While agreeing with Bassa-Komo that security presence should be increased it however added that: “We take exception from the security detachments that is only meant to secure and protect the Bassa-Komu Communities while the Mozum Communities that are under siege are left opened to attacks.
“The security architecture currently in place in favour of Bassa-Komu Communities should be extended to cover Egbura Communities, particularly the villages that, came under recent attacks. We pray and hope, that by now even the security operatives know who the attackers and the Aggressors are – between the Bassa-Komu and the Egbura of Bassa LGA.”
