From Lawal Sa’idu Funtua, Katsina
The Chairman, Katsina State Shariah Commission, Grand Khadi Alhafiz Abubakar, has urged the state government to declare first day of ‘Muharram’, the new month of Islamic year as public holiday.
Abubakar made the call yesterday in Katsina while addressing a press conference on the importance of Islamic Calendar.
‘’I am calling on the state government to emulate states like Kano, Zamfara, Sokoto and Jigawa by declaring the first day of ‘Muharram’, the first month of Islamic year as public holiday.
‘’The Muslims should also fast the nine and ten day of the Muharram to observe fasting and pray for the nation and its leaders,’’ he said.
He said that Islamic Shariah was aimed at protecting peoples lives, their senses, wealth, religion and relationships.
Abubakar said those were the things that assist in ensuring peaceful coexistence among people in the society.
‘’People misunderstood the concept of Shariah, whenever the name is mentioned, some people think of cutting hands of a thieves and other legal aspects.
‘’Shariah is a complete way of life, and is the solution to all our societal problems,’’ he said.
He also said that the commission would ensure speedy trial of criminal cases brought under the consideration of Shariah courts in the state.
